Sensory-based art EDucation for the inclusion of children with autism in the mainstream classroom
SensED is an innovative education project that uses sensory-based art as an inclusive pedagogy to support the meaningful inclusion of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in mainstream classrooms. The project empowers mainstream teachers by strengthening their knowledge, skills, and competences in sensory art therapy techniques, enabling them to create inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environments. Through the development of the SensED sensory-based art Tool—comprising a comprehensive handbook, practical lesson plans, best-practice guidelines, and video tutorials—teachers are guided step by step in implementing sensory-based art activities that foster interaction between children with ASD and their neurotypical peers.
SensED also promotes collaboration among educators, art therapy specialists, and autism experts, while actively disseminating its results to schools, stakeholders, and decision-makers. By doing so, the project contributes to sustainable, replicable inclusive practices and supports policy development that embraces diversity and equal opportunities for all learners.
Main Objectives:
- CO1:Build an innovative sensory-based art tool to effectively guide teachers to create an inclusive art classroom environment for children with autism in the mainstream classroom.
- CO2:Increase mainstream teachers’ knowledge, skills, and key competences in sensory art therapy techniques as inclusive pedagogies to better accommodate the needs of children with ASD
- CO3:Foster interaction in the mainstream classroom between children with ASD and their neurotypical peers, using sensory art as a bridge.
- CO4:Disseminate the Tool to interested parties and relevant stakeholders in the education, art, autism fields, and promote its sustainability and replication in decision-makers to encourage them to include such a pioneering initiative in their educational policy agendas.
